Indian Nationals Stranded in Lebanon Amid Rising Concerns as Israel Launches Assault

The world has responded to Israel’s decision to combat the terror organization Hezbollah in Lebanon with the goal of “destroying” it with shock and dismay. As a result of the violence, several countries have acted swiftly to remove their citizens from the increasingly unstable area. In light of the current Israeli strikes, India has also released advisories asking its people to avoid traveling to Lebanon. Official data indicates that there are now around 4,000 Indian nationals living in Lebanon; nevertheless, the government is advising them to leave as soon as possible to protect themselves.

India’s Concern for Its Citizens

In its advice, the Indian embassy in Beirut described the substantial number of Indian citizens residing in Lebanon, pointing out that the majority work in a variety of industries, such as construction, agriculture, and businesses. According to the consulate’s official website, “there are approximately 4,000 Indian nationals in Lebanon, with the majority of them employed as workers in companies, the construction sector, agricultural farms, etc.”

India is worried about the security of its people, but it’s also critical to emphasize how closely the two countries are connected. The embassy has emphasized how India and Lebanon have remained strong over the years, even amid the country’s 1975–1990 civil war.

Israel

In contrast to many other nations that closed their embassies, India maintained its diplomatic presence in Lebanon during the civil war, and the Lebanese people are grateful for this. This deepens the relationship between the two countries even further, as does India’s longstanding support for the Palestinian cause and its close ties to the Arab world,” an official statement from the Indian embassy said.

The Indian government has not refrained from recommending its nationals to evacuate the conflict-affected region as soon as possible, even in light of the positive relations between India and Lebanon. Foreign nationals are deemed to be too dangerous to stay in Lebanon due to the increasing violence, especially in the southern region.

Israeli Ground Forces Enter Southern Lebanon

Israeli ground forces’ entry into southern Lebanon, a significant escalation in their protracted confrontation with Hezbollah, marked a turning point in the current scenario. With this action, Israel and Hezbollah, the terror organization supported by Iran, have established a new front in their year-long conflict. Following weeks of intense Israeli shelling on Hezbollah, including an airstrike that is said to have killed the organization’s longtime leader, Hassan Nasrallah, comes the ground assault.

Israel

The current campaign seeks to make it evident that Israel will not put up with attacks on its northern regions while also undermining Hezbollah’s capabilities. The already precarious situation has been made worse by Hezbollah’s rocket launches into northern Israel since the beginning of the Gaza war. The last time that Israeli and Hezbollah forces engaged in direct combat on the ground was in a battle that lasted for a month in 2006, leaving much of Lebanon in ruins and with significant losses on both sides.

As it aims to destroy Hezbollah and lessen the organization’s power along its northern border, Israel is taking a significant risk with this assault. Concerns for a regional escalation are also mounting in light of the military action, as Iran may be supporting Hezbollah’s resistance against Israeli soldiers more than previously.

Indian Embassy Issues Travel Advisory

The Indian embassy in Beirut has issued strong advice for Indian people in light of the conflict’s escalation. The embassy warned all of its people to avoid traveling to Lebanon as long as the situation persists. Those who are currently in Lebanon are urged to leave as quickly as possible by the administration, making sure to take all required safety precautions.

“We also strongly warn all Indian nationals who are currently in Lebanon to depart from Lebanon. In its recommendation, the Indian Embassy in Beirut stated that those who choose to stay should use great caution, limit their travel, and stay in touch with the embassy via email at cons.beirut@mea.gov.in or by calling the emergency number, +96176860128.

Israel

The embassy is in close communication with Indian nationals and is ready to provide aid if needed, even though no official evacuation plan has been declared. To safeguard its nationals, the Indian government is closely observing the situation and will act further if needed.

PM Modi Speaks with Netanyahu

As the ground assault developed, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi conducted a phone chat with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The two leaders spoke on how the situation in the region was changing quickly, with a particular emphasis on the need to eradicate terrorism and bring peace back to the Middle East.

PM Modi used social media to post his reflections on the call after it ended. “Discussed current events in West Asia with Prime Minister Netanyahu. There is no room for terrorism on our planet. Maintaining the safe release of all captives and preventing regional escalation are of utmost importance. He wrote on X (previously Twitter) that “India is committed to supporting efforts for an early restoration of peace and stability.”

Israel-Hezbollah War and the Humanitarian Crisis

Following the terrorist organization’s rocket assaults that drove tens of thousands of Israelis from areas near the border with Lebanon, Israel vowed to step up its battle against Hezbollah. The prolonged fighting is having a worsening humanitarian effect. The war has resulted in the displacement of over 200,000 Lebanese, according to the UN, just in the last week.

A growing number of foreign requests for a ceasefire and de-escalation have not made Israel waver in its resolve. There is a section of the Israeli border that the Israeli government has declared a military zone, giving its soldiers greater leeway to conduct operations there. Israel’s military has made it plain that it will not give up until the terrorist organization is destroyed in response to the ongoing rocket attacks by Hezbollah.

There is still disagreement in the international community over this matter; some nations, like the US, support Israel’s right to self-defense against terrorist assaults, while others want an immediate end to hostilities. Amidst the ongoing conflict, Lebanon is confronting an expanding refugee crisis, with displaced families in dire need of immediate aid.
