India Rejects China’s Criticism of PM Modi’s Arunachal Pradesh Visit

India said on Tuesday that it is illogical to complain about such trips or economic initiatives, and it rejected China’s diplomatic protest regarding Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Arunachal Pradesh last week. Beijing took issue with PM Modi’s opening of the Sela Tunnel, which is located in Arunachal Pradesh and will provide Indian forces with easy access to regions near their disputed border.

Spokesman for the Chinese foreign ministry Wang Wenbin told reporters during a routine briefing that “the Chinese government has never recognized the so-called Arunachal Pradesh locally set up by India, and we firmly oppose this.” Chinese claim Arunachal Pradesh is South Tibet; to support this claim, Indian leaders are regularly asked to visit the region. Beijing also refers to the area as Zangnan.

A spokesperson for the external affairs ministry named Randhir Jaiswal told the media in response to the Chinese viewpoint, saying, “We reject the comments made by the Chinese side regarding the visit of the Prime Minister to Arunachal Pradesh.” Along with visiting other Indian states, politicians also occasionally travel to Arunachal Pradesh. Jaiswal stated that it is illogical to object to these visits or India’s development initiatives.

It won’t change the reality, either, that the State of Arunachal Pradesh is and has always been an integral part of India in any way. On multiple occasions, the Chinese side has been informed of this steadfast stance, he continued.
