Google Joins Global Coalition for Transparency in Digital Content in the AI Era

Google has become a member of the Coalition for material origin and Authenticity (C2PA) steering committee. C2PA is an international standards group that certifies the origin of digital material and encourages online openness. In an effort to provide transparency for digital content in the AI era, Google supports Content Credentials. The announcement was made on Friday. To create the technical specification for Content Credentials, Google will work with more steering committee members, including Adobe, BBC, Intel, Microsoft, Publicis Groupe, Sony, and Truepic.

The technological standard for tamper-resistant metadata that may be appended to digital content that provides information about when and how the content was created or altered is called Content Credentials, according to the C2PA. Dana Rao, General Counsel and Chief Trust Officer at Adobe and Co-founder of the C2PA, stated in a statement that “the urgency to increase trust in the digital ecosystem has never been more pressing in the critical context of this year’s global elections where the threat of misinformation looms larger than ever.”

“From content creation to consumption, Google’s membership will help accelerate the adoption of Content Credentials everywhere,” he continued. Furthermore, the involvement of Google—which includes YouTube—will contribute to raising awareness of information Credentials as a crucial tool for assisting individuals in comprehending the information they are consuming and gaining confidence in the digital ecosystem.

Vice President of Trust and Safety at Google Laurie Richardson said, “At Google, a crucial component of our responsible approach to AI involves engaging with others in the industry to help increase transparency around digital content.” “It builds on our work in this space, which includes YouTube’s labels indicating synthetic or altered content, Google DeepMind’s SynthID, and Search’s About this Image,” the spokesperson continued. “It provides important context to people, helping them make more informed decisions.”

Content Credentials serve as a kind of digital content “nutrition label,” indicating the creation and modification dates of a piece of material.Anyone can use Content Credentials, which are free and open-source technologies to develop their own platforms and solutions, building upon the C2PA open technical standard.
