Glenn McGrath Discusses Mitchell Starc’s Price-Tag Pressure Ahead of KKR Opener

Glenn McGrath, a legendary pacer, shared his thoughts on Mitchell Starc’s incredible return to the Indian Premier League after the latter was signed by Kolkata Knight Riders for an astounding INR 24.75 crore. Despite missing the final eight IPL seasons, the left-arm pacer rose to become the most expensive player in the history of the competition. Several teams, including Royal Challengers Bangalore, Gujarat Titans, Mumbai Indians, and Kolkata Knight Riders, engaged in a bidding war during the IPL auction, which was started by Starc. KKR coach Gautam Gambhir, however, was determined to sign the Australian paceman and completed the transaction with an unprecedented offer.

Starc anchored the RCB bowling attack during his two IPL seasons (2014) and (2015), totaling 34 wickets in 27 matches. McGrath said that Starc’s IPL comeback would not be stopped if he is able to get movement from the surface.

“For personal reasons, Starc decided not to attend the IPL. However, he returns and receives a record price. It will be something he is eager to do. McGrath told the reporters at the MRF Pace Foundation that “if he is moving the ball around, on his day, he will be as good as any other fast bowler.”

Glenn McGrath Confident: Price Tag Won’t Affect Starc and Cummins in IPL

In addition to Starc, Pat Cummins, an Australian, also made a big sensation at the auction, earning INR 20.5 crore for Sunrisers Hyderabad, who went on to appoint him their skipper for the 2024 Indian Premier League.

McGrath believes that the Australian pace combination won’t be under any strain in the league that is loaded with riches, despite the high price tag.

The amount of money they received is astounding. However, they are both highly skilled gamers who are familiar with the game. They will play as well as they have in the past when they go out.

The legendary Australian player also shared his opinion on how long Starc will be able to play at the best level—he is currently 34 years old and plays in all three departments on a regular basis.

“Everything is contingent upon Starc’s desires. Jimmy Anderson is still moving the ball at 41 years old, while I retired at the age of 33. It’s about how much time he spends playing and how much fun he and his body are having,” McGrath stated.
