Eyewitness Reveals Drone Bombing in Manipur’s ‘General Warfare’ Attack

The story was tragic and unfolded in that village near Koutruk in the Kangchup region of Imphal West, Manipur. The incident materialized together with the attack by militants and left one dead and several injured.

The horror started by finding that two drones flew over just ahead of the bombs dropping into the village. “I saw two drones, flying over our village before they dropped the bombs…some of the houses are still burning,” recounted Sunil Ningthoujam, a local resident and a general secretary of the village peace committee, recounting that terrifying experience.

The attack that happened around 2 p.m. on Sunday resulted in the death of Ngangbam Ongbi Surbala, an innocent housewife who, along with her 11-year-old daughter, was visiting her maternal house.

The girl has suffered a gunshot injury in the right arm. The militants reportedly used drones to drop grenades on the village where the gunfight between militants and security personnel continued till late evening. A local journalist and two police personnel were among several others injured in the attack.

This was the violent incident a day after Kuki-Zo groups held protest rallies against Chief Minister N Biren Singh in the Kangpokpi and Churachandpur districts.

In response, Manipur police blamed Kuki rebels for the attack and described the incident as a “major escalation” using methods traditionally employed in war.

“The use of drones to deploy explosives against security forces and civilians reflects a disturbing rise in violence,” police said on X, the social network platform formerly called Twitter.

Similarly, they are continuing to monitor the situation closely and are ready to act when appropriate. The Manipur Home Department strongly condemned the attack and termed it an “unfortunate” act of terror against unarmed villagers.
