Election Results 2024: Vinesh Phogat Claims Victory in Debut Haryana Assembly Seat, Says “Truth Has Won”

Vinesh Phogat, a former wrestler and Congress candidate, has won a noteworthy election for the Haryana assembly seat of Julana. “Truth has won,” Phogat announced in her first public speech after her win, marking a critical milestone for the Congress party. Her win coincides with the fact that, according to the most recent figures from the Election Commission, the Congress now holds 35 seats, while the ruling BJP now holds 50 seats, surpassing the majority threshold in the Haryana parliament. With the BJP headed for a third term in office, their impressive performance has disproved exit polls that projected a return by the Congress.

The 30-year-old Phogat expressed optimism in spite of these developments, saying, “Let’s wait for the certificates. The government will be formed by the Congress.” On Tuesday, October 5, the elections in Haryana started the vote counting process at 8 a.m. Phogat defeated her primary rivals, Kavita Dalal of the Aam Aadmi Party and former professional wrestler Captain Yogesh Bairagi of the BJP. By a margin of more than 6,000 votes, she won. Phogat, who was shocked out of the Olympics after a disappointing performance, made her political debut on September 6 when she joined the Congress, immediately earning a place on the party’s list of candidates.

She declared at the time, “I am starting a new journey.” “I want to ensure that sportspersons don’t go through what we had to endure.” Amidst accusations of wrongdoing, Vinesh Phogat led the demonstrations against BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh last year. “You realize who stands by you during tough times,” she said, looking back on her political journey and thanking the Congress. All the parties save the BJP took notice of our suffering when we were being dragged through the streets.” The BJP and Congress are facing off in their first significant head-to-head match since the Lok Sabha elections in these elections in Haryana. The storyline for the next elections in other Indian states is anticipated to be shaped by the result.
