Drunk Patient Assaults Woman Doctor by Slamming Her Head Against Bed at Andhra Pradesh Hospital

A disturbing video has surfaced, in which an unidentified man was shown violently attacking a woman doctor in SVIMS Tirupati hospital in Andhra Pradesh.

The incident that brings to the fore serious concerns on the safety cover for healthcare professionals had taken place in the casualty ward of the hospital in which a drunk patient goes on to attack the internee by continuously slamming her head with great force against the steel frame of a hospital bed.

The man is shown in a vicious video that went popular on social media, but it could not be independently verified. “Asking Andhra Pradesh police to take action” and “there is a dire need for Central Protection Act for doctors now” are the messages he received when uploading the video.

This comes weeks after outrage over the alleged rape-murder of a female trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital amidst calls from doctors for greater legal protection.

The CCTV recordings captured other doctors immediately intervening and overpowering the assailant, preventing the full attack. The intern wrote a letter to Dr. RV Kumar, the Director-cum-Vice Chancellor of SVIMS, alleging that there were no security personnel when the attack happened. She identified the attacker as one Bangaru Raju and mentioned that it may be far severe had the patient been furnished with any weapon.

It is also a graphic account of the traumatic event, which the intern has mentioned in the letter: “I was suddenly assaulted by a patient Bangaru Raju who came up from the rear and dragged my hair and began forcibly banging my head against the steel rod of a cot.”

Doctors at SVIMS Tirupati have protested following the incident, stating that immediate measures need to be taken to ensure safety for them, and preventive measures need to be put in place to guard against such incidents in the future.
