Dinesh Karthik Contemplates IPL Retirement: ‘If I Come Back for That…

Aware of reports that he was close to retirement, veteran wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik suggested that the 2024 Indian Premier League would be his final. The playing career of Karthik, an Indian in the Premier League, is almost over. He plays for the Royal Challengers in Bangalore. His most recent statement has virtually validated the many theories that stated this might be the wicketkeeper batter’s last season before the league started in 2024.

Karthik is one of the few players in the lucrative IPL 2024 who has participated in the league since its founding in 2008. In his illustrious career, the 38-year-old has played for six different teams and led the Kolkata Knight Riders once. He was given finisher’s duty on the side after joining RCB, and he has done a good job of it so far. In the opening game of the season against the Chennai Super Kings at Chepauk Stadium, which doubles as his home venue for domestic cricket, the wicketkeeper-batsman scored an important 38 runs off of 26 balls.

When asked after the game if Friday’s match may be his last at Chepauk, Karthik said he would attempt to return for another game if a playoff match was set for Chennai; if not, the season opener might have been his last at the stadium. “What a wonderful question! I really hope that it’s not, as there could be a few playoff games here. It might be my last if I return for that. In the news conference following the game, Karthik stated, “If not, I think it could be.” Karthik’s heroic innings, however, were futile as the Chennai Super Kings easily overcame the 174-run deficit to win the game by six wickets and maintain their dominance over Royal Challengers Bangalore.
