Did Ryan Reynolds Troll Justin Baldoni in Deadpool & Wolverine Before Blake Lively’s Sexual Harassment Allegations?

Theories that Ryan Reynolds may have discreetly made fun of Justin Baldoni in Deadpool and Wolverine are rife among Marvel Cinematic Universe fans. The conjecture coincides with continuing disputes that arose during the filming of It Ends With Us between Baldoni and Ryan Reynolds’ wife, Blake Lively. Only a few weeks before Blake’s picture It Ends With Us, which was co-starred and directed by Baldoni, opened in theaters in early August 2024, the Marvel blockbuster made its debut in July. Soon after, Lively and Baldoni’s battle at the box office turned into a growing conflict that resulted in litigation that continued to make news well into the new year.

Marvel Fans Revisit Nicepool in Context of Lively-Baldoni Feud

Marvel fans have reexamined Wolverine and Deadpool, paying special attention to Ryan Reynolds’s portrayal of Nicepool, a variation of Deadpool. In sharp contrast to the titular antihero, Nicepool’s portrayal is interpreted by fans as a lighthearted slap at Baldoni. During his introduction, Nicepool praises Ladypool, a figure with Blake Lively’s voice. “Wait till you’ve seen Ladypool, please. She is quite beautiful. When he replies, “She just had a baby too, and [you] can’t even tell,” Deadpool responds, “I don’t think you’re supposed to say that.” Later, Nicepool says, “That’s okay. I consider myself to be a feminist. Nicepool says, “I’d be fighting alongside you, but my calling is to one day start a podcast that monetizes the women’s movement,” in a deleted sequence that heightens the suspense. Baldoni, co-host of The Man Enough podcast, which examines issues of gender norms and masculinity, was immediately associated with this remark by TikTok users.

Allegations Against Justin Baldoni

In his complaint filed in December 2024, Blake Lively accuses Baldoni of fat shaming and other wrongdoing while filming It Ends With Us. According to the lawsuit, a few months after Lively gave birth to her fourth child, Baldoni allegedly went behind her back to her trainer and demanded a quick weight loss plan. Baldoni’s podcast co-host Jamey Heath is also named in the complaint as a target of Lively’s charges, and Liz Plank, their fellow co-host, announced her exit from the program soon after Lively’s accusations were made public. Baldoni, the author of Man Enough: Undefining My Masculinity and a self-described feminist, has refuted every accusation. On-set sources, however, have attacked him for establishing what they refer to as “performative woke feminism” as his brand, which has fueled public debate even more.

Ryan Reynolds’ Alleged Confrontation

In an additional complaint, Baldoni said that Ryan Reynolds had confronted him at a production meeting and accused him of fat-shaming Blake Lively, which further escalated the dispute. According to Baldoni, who called the experience “traumatic,” Reynolds scolded him in front of several producers and a Sony official.

Hollywood’s Divisive Summer

The conflict between Reynolds, Lively, and Baldoni has increased criticism of how gender dynamics and interpersonal interactions are portrayed in Hollywood. The wider dispute highlights the intricacies of celebrity, privilege, and accountability in the entertainment sector, even as Marvel fans speculate about Reynolds’ intentions in light of Nicepool’s sarcastic commentary in Deadpool and Wolverine.
