Devendra Fadnavis Takes Responsibility for BJP’s Maharashtra Election Setback, Offers Resignation as Deputy CM
Devendra Fadnavis, a key politician of the Bharatiya Janata Party and the deputy chief minister of Maharashtra, is expected to ask the party leadership to remove him from his deputy CM duties. The party’s dismal showing in the most recent Lok Sabha elections, where its representation in Maharashtra fell sharply from 23 seats in 2019 to just nine seats this year, is the reason behind this action.
Principally responsible for the BJP’s electoral defeat, Fadnavis accepted entire responsibility for the party’s loss. To help the party perform better in the next Assembly elections, I want to work at the organizational level. Developing the organization is what I want to focus on full-time. “I intend to ask my higher authority to release me from my state government position,” Fadnavis declared at a press conference following a meeting to evaluate the Lok Sabha results.
Prominent BJP figures, including state unit chairman Chandrashekhar Bawankule, attended the conference, which was called a day after the election results were declared. The primary items on the agenda were discussing future strategies and evaluating the party’s performance. The result was seen as a sharp decline from the 2019 elections, even though the BJP and its allies won 17 of the 48 Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra.

In the previous Lok Sabha elections, Maharashtra saw 23 seats won by the BJP. However, this time, the Congress, the UBT, and the NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) together form the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), outperforming the party. The alliance saw a significant win as the MVA as a whole took home 30 seats. Compared to just one seat in 2019, Congress saw a stunning surge, gaining 13 members. Shiv Sena (UBT) won nine seats, while Rakesh Sharma’s NCP (National Congress Party) won eight. After Fadnavis was sworn in as deputy chief minister, Eknath Shinde assumed leadership of the government on June 30, 2022.
