Dev Patel’s Journey: From Shame to Pride in Indian Heritage Through ‘Monkey Man’ Debut
Indian mythology serves as the inspiration for Dev Patel’s feature film debut, Monkey Man. However, the British actor has disclosed that he wasn’t always confident in his Indian ancestry. Dev once said he was “ashamed” of his heritage on an episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show.
Dev’s confession
“I used to feel embarrassed about the Indian portion of my ancestry. Greater London schools aren’t the coolest places to be. I’m doing everything I can to avoid showing that scene, acting in movies like Slumdog Millionaire, and producing these kinds of productions. Dev remarked, “I realized that with the first movie, I’m going to direct, I’m going to triple down on culture, not double down.”
Dev on influences for Monkey Man
“I grew up watching Jackie Chan, Jim Carrey, Bruce Lee, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Bollywood films.” Everything is contained within Monkey Man. “The cocktail is what makes me,” Dev continued. He claimed that the story of Lord Hanuman, in which the character loses all confidence and forgets who he is, served as the inspiration for Monkey Man. Regaining his identity with the aid of other oppressed groups was an excellent storyline for an action film.
