6 Killed in Rain-Related Incidents in Delhi-NCR, More Showers Likely Today | 10 Points

At least six people have died in rain-related accidents in Delhi, including a labourer caught in the rubble of an under-constriction wall in Vasant Vihar and a 45-year-old cab driver who was murdered when a canopy collapsed at Indira Gandhi International Airport’s Terminal 1 on Friday. The national capital awoke to another cloudy morning on Saturday, with areas of the city recording light showers after receiving 228.1 mm of rain in 24 hours on Friday, the most in a single day in June in 88 years.

The monsoon has arrived in the capital, and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted mild to moderate rainfall over the next five days, with heavy showers expected in areas of Delhi until July 1. The minimum temperature in Delhi on Saturday was 28.0 °C, which is usual for this time of year. It was 24.7°C the day before.

Here are the latest updates on the Delhi rainfall:

  1. Several parts of the city remained flooded, and several areas endured extended power outages.
  2. According to the weather agency, June has now received 234.5mm of rainfall, more than three times the typical monthly average of 74.1mm.
  3. Three workmen’s bodies were retrieved from the wreckage of a collapsed wall at a building site in Vasant Vihar on Saturday. According to Delhi Fire Service personnel, two of them have been identified: Santosh Kumar Yadav (19) and Santosh (38). The third labourer is yet to be recognized.
  4. A search is ongoing to guarantee that no one else is trapped beneath the rubble. The effort is being carried out by teams from the National Disaster Response Force, the Delhi Disaster Management Authority, and civic authorities, according to officials.
  5. On Friday, two boys, ages 8 and 10, drowned while playing in a rainwater-filled drain in New Usmanpur, Delhi. In another incident, a man drowned in a flooded underpass in the Shalimar Bagh neighbourhood.
  6. On Friday, a 39-year-old man was electrocuted in Rohini’s Prem Nagar area.
  7. The severe rain also caused trees to fall in many spots, causing damage to properties and cars parked in residential areas.
  8. Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj revealed that the Delhi administration has set up a 24-hour control room to monitor the waterlogging situation.
  9. Meanwhile, the canopy collapse at Delhi Airport T-1 has resulted in an indefinite stoppage of operations at the terminal, which handles over 200 aircraft each day. Civil aviation minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu further stated that a war room has been established to secure refunds or replacement flights for anybody affected by the incident. He also promised a refund or substitute tickets within seven days to individuals whose flights had been cancelled.
  10. The Delhi Police have filed a first information report (FIR) under Indian Penal Code sections 304A (death by negligence) and 337 (causing hurt by Act endangering others’ lives or personal safety).
