FIR Filed Against Social Media User for Lewd Remarks on Captain Anshuman Singh’s Widow
The Delhi Police filed a First Information Report (FIR) on Saturday against a social media user for making “lewd and derogatory” remarks against Smriti Singh, the spouse of Captain Anshuman Singh, the posthumous recipient of the Kirti Chakra, in response to a complaint made by the National Commission for Women (NCW). An officer stated that in accordance with pertinent provisions of the Information Technology (IT) Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the force’s Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operation (IFSO) unit has filed the FIR.
On July 1, the colonial-era Indian Penal Code (IPC) was superseded by the BNS. Section 79 of the BNS (word, gesture, or act intended to offend a woman’s modesty) and Section 67 of the IT Act (posting or conveying obscene information in electronic form) have been used to book the social media user, a resident of Delhi. On Monday, the NCW filed a complaint after taking suo motu cognizance of the issue. The women’s body also requested a thorough report within three days and wrote to the Delhi Police Commissioner to seek the man’s arrest.
The man’s remarks are against both Section 67 of the IT Act of 2000 and Section 79 of the BNS, 2023. NCW expresses strong condemnation for this behavior and calls for swift action on X (previously Twitter). The matter is presently the subject of more investigation. Anshuman Singh, a doctor serving on duty, was killed in July of last year in a fire that broke out at an Indian Army ammunition dump in the camp where he was stationed. He served as a medical officer in the Siachen Glacier region with the 26 Punjab.

Following the rescue of a few people, the officer entered a burning medical investigation room to get the vital medical aid box. But couldn’t see much because of the fierce fire and heavy winds. The nation’s second-highest peacetime gallantry honor, the Kirti Chakra, was given to Captain Anshuman Singh in recognition of his valor after his death. President Draupadi Murumu presented the honor to his widow, Smriti Singh, and mother, Manju Singh, at Rashtrapati Bhavan on July 5.
