WPL 2024 Clash: Delhi Capitals vs UP Warriorz Seek First Win in Bengaluru Showdown
In their respective opening two tournament matches against the Mumbai Indians (MI) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), the Delhi Capitals (DC) and UP Warriorz were left empty-handed after two thrilling finishes. M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru will host this match on Monday, providing an opportunity for one of these two teams to score.
With MI needing five runs off of one ball and captain Harmanpreet Kaur back in the pavilion on Friday, DC would have believed they were favorites to win. This was not to be, though, as S Sajana displayed unwavering nerve to strike Alice Capsey for a six on the final ball and give the defending champions an incredible victory.
What: UP Warriors vs Delhi Capitals Match 4, WPL 2024
When: February 26, 2024
Where: M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru
Time: 7:30 PM IST
There were a few bright spots for the Meg Lanning-led team despite the loss, not the least of which was Capsey and Jemimah Rodrigues’ batting display, which made sure DC scored a respectable amount in the opening innings. During the remainder of the competition, DC will be hoping that Arundhati Reddy’s impressive bowling spell—which included taking out Nat Sciver-Brunt and Yastika Bhatia—is the beginning of a sustained run with the ball for her. The team has to work on their death bowling before Monday’s match. It would be intriguing to watch if Lanning ends the spinovers early and trusts the Pacers to finish the job in the final overs.
If DC lost heartbreakingly while defending a score, the Warriors would have wondered why they lost with five runs needed off the final ball in their match against RCB rather than finishing the game considerably sooner. They were one over away from winning their first match of the season at 126 for 3 in 16 overs, but they were unable to pull it off. Leg-spinner Asha Sobhana had more influence in one chaseover that completely changed the course of the game.
But even with the loss, Warriorz had a lot of momentum going into the following game. Grace Harris and Shweta Sehrawat’s batting on Saturday established the groundwork for the team to cross the finish line, while the spin combination of Deepti Sharma, Rajeshwari Gayakwad, and Sophie Ecclestone effectively managed the flow of runs. Both teams, though, were unable to accomplish that in their first two games, so they will be vying to start top of the points table on Monday.
