Deepti Sharma Shines as UP Warriorz Secure Thrilling 1-Run Victory over Delhi Capitals in WPL 2024

For their third victory of the WPL 2024, UP Warriorz overcame the Delhi Capitals, who were at the top of the table, by a mere one run. DC appeared to be on track as they chased 139 following a brilliant half-century from captain Meg Lanning. After falling behind 93/2, DC’s batting collapse was so severe that they lost eight more wickets for 44 runs. Deepti Sharma led UPW in scoring with a well-balanced half-century and went on to take a hat-trick in two sessions. At a pivotal point in the match, Deepti Sharma was left to fend for herself against the formidable Delhi Capitals Women after UP Warriorz lost two significant wickets in rapid succession, Grace Harris and Shweta Sehrawat.

After winning the toss, UP-W’s Alyssa Healy decided to bat first. Healy may have misread the circumstances, though, since the Capitals bowling unit was all over them. The first blood was drawn by Titas Sadhu in Kiran Navgire, and runs stopped trickling in for UP with the ejection of captain Healy.

But, veteran Indian all-rounder Deepti Sharma put up a valiant battle from one end as UP-W’s back was against the wall. She managed a 50-run important knock, but she was severely let down by her teammates.

Deepti Sharma Battles Alone

When UP Warriorz made the decision to change up their approach in the 14th over, veteran batter Grace Harris holed out to the fielder at point. By reducing the pace off the ball, Radha Yadav of DC-W tricked Harris by reading her movements down the track. She cleverly bowled wide to the off-stump, and Harris attempted a huge shot but produced a thick outside edge that fell into Jess Jonassen’s capable hands at point.

Shweta Sehrawat’s lack of experience was severely revealed in the very following over. Shweta was unable to keep up with Titas Sadhu’s quicker delivery onto the stumps. Her leg stump was struck by the angle in delivery, and she was struck on the outside edge. Deepti Sharma was left stranded at the other end as UP-W lost half the side in 15 overs after that. She batted deep, but not in a way that would have had a big impact on the scoreboard.

Just 138 runs had been scored by UP Warriorz at the conclusion of 20 overs, clearly insufficient for the formidable Delhi Capitals batting lineup.
