Cristiano Ronaldo Hits Unprecedented 900-Goal Milestone: “Records Haunt Me”
Cristiano Ronaldo stamp in the history books is getting bigger as he has reached yet another unprecedented landmark in his already illustrious career in football.
On September 6, Ronaldo scored his 900th career goal in Portugal’s 2-1 win over Croatia in a UEFA Nations League group match, something no player has ever managed to achieve in history.
The six-time Ballon d’Or winner scored Portugal’s second goal in the game and moved further up his position as one of the greatest goal scorers in football.
Speaking with a post-match interviewer, Ronaldo reflected on the fantastic feat, saying records may be milestones, but to him, that means something more.
“900 goals might seem like just another milestone, but only I know how much hard work and dedication it takes to score your 900th goal. It’s a unique moment in my career. I don’t break records; they haunt me, he said underlining how personal this feat was important to him.
That was the 131st goal for Portugal by Ronaldo, which won the game for his national team and ensured that their campaign in UEFA Nations League Group A got underway with a win.
Falling to his knees, overcome by his emotions, Ronaldo scored from the edge of the six-yard box as the enormity of the moment took hold. That he did it on home soil made the moment all the more special for the 39-year-old forward.
The millions of fans have been guessing when he would finally retire from international football, yet Ronaldo continues to play with the sort of tempo and skill on the pitch that belies all expectations of longevity and performance.
The Portuguese legend recently hinted that such a decision would come as a spur-of-the-moment one. However, he explained that something shifted over time, and he is no longer motivated by winning more trophies with Portugal.
Winning it with Portugal, that’s like winning a World Cup. I’ve won two important trophies with my country, and that’s what mattered most to me.
Today, what motivates me is the pleasure of playing football; records come along the way, they’re a consequence of what one does on the pitch,” Ronaldo said in the interview.
Even approaching 40, the love for the game still drips from Ronaldo. Building from what had taken more than two decades now, he has made himself one of the most prolific goal scorers ever in football.
From his time at Sporting Lisbon, where he scored five goals, to legendary stints with Manchester United-where he scored 145 goals, Real Madrid-450, Juventus-101, and now Al-Nassr-68, Ronaldo has set new levels. His name adorns innumerable record books, and his influence on the game is immense.
The soccer world did not spare time celebrating the latest milestone. Real Madrid, the club where he got his nickname ‘Mr. Champions League’ for his great performances in Europe’s premier competition, congratulated their all-time top scorer via social media.
“Another historic milestone: 900 goals in the professional career of one of the greatest legends of Real Madrid and world football. Congratulations, dear and admired @Cristiano! Real Madrid and the Madrid fans are always proud of you,” the club wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.
The message reflected the deep admiration and respect Real Madrid and its fans continue to hold for their former star years after his departure from the Spanish club.
His time at Real Madrid was quite defining for Ronaldo. Nine seasons full of goals with the team earned him not only the title of Real Madrid’s all-time leading goal scorer but also earned his team multiple Champions League titles.
His unquenchable thirst for success and knack for rising to situations when it really mattered gave him the status of one of the finest players to have graced the competition.
However, Ronaldo’s legacy goes way beyond goals and individual marks. His work ethic, commitment to his craft, and being at the top of his game for two decades have inspired countless young footballers worldwide.
With all those accolades in his pocket, Ronaldo remains humble and focuses on how he can enjoy the game he loves.
So it goes, again and again, the Al-Nassr forward has continued to defy the odds and push beyond the boundaries in football; his 900th goal being testament to how great a career and how committed he has remained to his dream.
Of course, it’s much more about the record itself but rather the hard work, sacrifice, and passion driving Ronaldo to continue improving year after year.
One thing is for sure, though: his influence on the beautiful game remains un matched. Be it scoring them in or finally hanging up his boots, his name as one of the greatest footballers of all time has already been cast in stone.
The 900-goal milestone is just one more chapter in a story that has redefined the game, while inspiring players and fans alike.
