Controversy Erupts as SAD Leader Simranjit Singh Mann Makes Derogatory Remark on Kangana Ranaut

Shiromani Akali Dal leader and former MP from Punjab, Simranjit Singh Mann kicked up another row with a demeaning comment against actor-turned-politician Kangana Ranaut days after she said that rapes took place during farmer protests in the country’s northern belt earlier this year.

“Kangana Ranaut has ample experience of rape. You can ask her how it happens. People need to know how the incidents of rape take place,” the former Sangrur MP said. The SAD Amritsar chief made this remark while addressing a presser in Karnal over his decision to contest the Haryana polls.

He said that the ruling party was victimizing those who were leading the movement for freedom. He said Sikhs were not free and he stood by their demand for a separate country. He said they wanted a buffer state because it would avoid war between India and Pakistan.

Wagah border should be opened for trade, he said. “Our people have been in jail for 30 years, which is too long. The central government should release them. The government has released so many people prematurely. Why differentiate between Hindus and Sikhs?”

Breaking her silence over the SAD leader’s remarks, BJP MP from Mandi said they will not be able to “suppress her voice”. Ranaut said, “Today I am also receiving rape threats. They will not be able to suppress my voice like this.

BJP MP took to microblogging site X and wrote, “It seems this country will never stop trivialising rape, today this senior politician compared getting raped to riding a bicycle no wonder rapes and violence against women for fun, are so deeply rooted in the psyche of this patriarchal nation that it is casually used to tease or mock a woman even if she is a high profile filmmaker or politician.” On Wednesday, Ranaut admitted that she was reprimanded by her party, the BJP, over her remark on farmers’ protest. The MP from Mandi in the Lok Sabha said she was looking forward to being more discreet with her words and toeing the lines of the party’s policies.

The four-time National Film Award-winning actor for the films Queen, Tanu weds Manu Returns, Manikarnika- The Queen of Jhansi, and Panga, respectively, courted a controversy over her comment where she claimed that farmers’ protests might have resulted in a “Bangladesh-like situation” had the central government not taken strong measures.

The BJP, however, disowned her statement saying she was neither allowed nor authorized to speak on policy matters of the party.
