Complaint Filed Against Mamata Banerjee Over ‘If You Burn’ Warning to PM Modi
A Supreme Court advocate has lodged a complaint with the Delhi Police against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, stating that her recent comments were inflammatory with intent to incite rioting.
The complaint has been filed by one Vineet Jindal, centered around the purported remark from Banerjee during an event organized by the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad, “Remember if Bengal burns, then Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odish, Delhi too will burn”.
Jindal further contended that the words used by Banerjee were inflammatory, likely to create regional transport and thus pose a serious threat to the harmony and tranquility in national life and public order.
He highlighted the fact that as a chief minister, Banerjee’s statements carry considerable gravity, and as such, these utterances by her means particularly dangerous.
“Since she is instigating and provoking to create disharmony and foster hatred and enmity amongst the masses of India, I, being a resident of Delhi, respectfully request lodging of an FIR under Sections 152, 192, 196, and 353 of the BNS against Mamata Banerjee.
These offences are cognizable and serious in nature,” Jindal said in his complaint.
The above statements were issued by Banerjee on Wednesday as a reaction to the BJP’s 12-hour ‘Bengal Bandh,’ which she denounced as an effort to “defame” Bengal.
Banerjee accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of using his party to create unrest in the state. Banerjee also went on to compare the whole case to the student uprising in Bangladesh, leading to the ouster of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
She has, however, always clarified that there are many cultural similarities with Bengal, yet Bangladesh is different.
“Modi babu, you are trying to instigate unrest in Bengal through your people. But let me repeat, if you burn Bengal, Assam, the North-East, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and Delhi will also burn,” Banerjee said aloud, courting controversy.
In response, Chief Minister of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma attacked Banerjee as a purveyor of chaos and divisive politics: “Didi, how dare you threaten Assam?” he exclaimed in a post on X.
He continued with, “Don’t show us red eyes. Don’t try to set India on fire with your politics of failure. It does not suit you to speak divisive language.”.
It was followed by the state BJP president and Union Minister of State Sukanta Majumdar, who too joined the chorus in a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, terming the chief minister’s remarks a “blatant endorsement of revenge politics from the highest office in the state.”

The Union MoS accused Banerjee of anti-national comments when suggesting that unrest in Bengal would spill over into other states. “It is neither thinkable nor unprecedented that a chief minister who is constitutionally duty-bound to rise above partisan attitudes issues such intimidating statements amounting to a threat to democracy,” Majumdar told reporters.
