Chhaya Kadam Expresses Disappointment Over All We Imagine As Light Missing Out on India’s Oscars Entry

Chhaya Kadam, an actress, has some complicated emotions about Laapataa Ladies. The movie – directed by Kiran Rao – has been picked to represent India at the Oscars next year. While she’s obviously thrilled, there’s also disappointment: another of her films (All We Imagine As Light) wasn’t chosen.

Playing Manju Mai in Laapataa Ladies, Kadam told India Today how excited and happy she is about the nomination. “I am very happy and excited. What more can I say? It is a moment of pride for me that our film got selected as India’s official entry for the Oscars.”She also revealed that All We Imagine As Light had made the shortlist in France ahead of possible submission for the 2025 awards. “I have come to Paris right now for the premiere.”

Chhaya addressed the criticism surrounding the non-selection of All We Imagine As Light as India’s official entry by saying she felt torn: “I’m thrilled for Laapataa Ladies, but I do feel a twinge of sadness for Payal’s movie. This choice wasn’t up to me — it was made by the Film Federation. Still, you know what would be nice? Seeing both these films at the Oscars!”

Laapataa Ladies has been chosen to represent India at the 2025 Oscars, the country’s Film Federation revealed in Chennai on Monday – and the news has caused quite a stir on social media. A satire on patriarchy that doesn’t take itself too seriously, the film was picked from a tough field of 29 contenders.

Among them were Animal, featuring heartthrob Ranbir Kapoor; Malayalam movie Aattam, which won a National Award last year; and All We Imagine As Light. The last-named flick made waves after scooping the Grand Prix at Cannes in 2024.Still, not everyone is happy with the decision. “Continuing their streak of stupid picks is the Indian Oscar jury with Laapataa Ladies instead of All We Imagine As Light,” wrote one person online. As the first Indian film to win the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival in 2024, All We Imagine As Light wrote history.
