On Friday, the Chennai Super Kings defeated Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Chennai by a margin of six wickets, capping off a successful opening to their IPL 2024 campaign. The team that witnessed the famous Mahendra Singh Dhoni hand over the captaincy on the eve of their first game played an impressive performance. Ruturaj Gaikwad took charge. Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja had a somewhat comical exchange before the side losing their top and middle order quite cheaply. Anuj Rawat and Dinesh Karthik guided RCB innings following a disastrous collapse.

At the non-striker’s end of the field, Kohli was when Jadeja bowled to Cameron Green. After returning to competitive cricket, Kohli has not played for almost two months. Since the spinner is renowned for finishing his overs quickly, Jadeja quickly returned to his bowling mark after bowling a ball to bowl the next. When it became evident that Green was not quite prepared to face the next delivery, Kohli yelled at Jadeja, “Let him breathe man!”

Despite scoring 21 runs off of 20 deliveries, Kohli had a quiet effort in his comeback encounter. Kohli had to control the run-scoring when the middle-order wickets fell quickly. But, as the overs went by, he took Mustafizur Rahman on with a powerful pull shot and was caught at deep midwicket. Mustafizur trapped Green in the same over, and Green was out of the game. The CSK pacer finished with four wickets and was named player of the match.

New era for CSK

A day before the CSK vs. RCB IPL 2024 opener, Ruturaj Gaikwad was formally designated the new captain, but the 26-year-old didn’t falter in the face of starting the season at home. MS Dhoni, the wicketkeeper-batter who frequently assisted the CSK skipper in preparing the field during the RCB innings, was another asset to Gaikwad behind the wickets.
