Centre to Create 5 New Districts in Ladakh, Announces Home Minister Amit Shah

Home Minister Amit Shah said that the Ministry of Home Affairs will form five new districts in Ladakh, a union territory. Sharing a statement on Narendra Modi, Shah said, “This move is taken keeping in view the aspirations of people to have improved governance and benefits reaching the doorstep of the people residing far-flung areas in Ladakh.”.

Shah attributed this development to the vision of a developed and prosperous Ladakh by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. And that the new districts, therefore, created will be those of Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra, and Changthang.

“This initiative is part of the endeavor by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to make Ladakh a prosperous place,” Shah said. “These new districts will institutionalize a governance system that will be easy, effective, and reaches every nook and corner of the region. The Modi government is committed to bringing ample opportunities to the people of Ladakh.”

At present Ladakh is divided into two districts, namely Leh and Kargil, each headed by their autonomous district councils, the addition of two districts will make it a total of 7. With a move of the administrative department of Indian government, it is further decentralizing the administrative responsibilities that would be handed over to the people of Ladakh to make local governance more and fruitful.
