BCCI Considers Hosting IPL Twice Annually in Ambitious Move

BCCI Considers Hosting IPL Twice Annually in Ambitious Move

The immensely profitable Indian Premier League (IPL) may be about to undergo a significant change as the Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) is considering holding two IPL tournaments a year. This forward-thinking idea, which was first supported by former India coach Ravi Shastri, currently depends on determining the best times to schedule games.

The IPL hopes to conclude early in 2024 in order to provide Indian players time to adjust to a variety of playing environments before significant competitions. Aiming for a wrap-up by May 25 or 26, this approach indicates possible difficulties for participants as it expects an increase in doubleheaders to make the deadline. This tactical change demonstrates the league’s dedication to supporting player adaptability and making sure the tournament is finished in the allotted amount of time.

IPL Chairman Discusses Expansion Plans and Scheduling Challenges

“We are planning 74 games in the first two seasons of the IPL Media Rights for the five-year (2023–2027) cycle, and we will progressively increase to 84 games in the following two and 94 games if we receive that kind of window.” We currently need to find a window for 84 games, and then for 94, under the type of bilateral relationship we have for the next four years, according to IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal, who was cited by The Telegraph.

It is challenging to find time during this busy season because of the bilateral agreements and ICC events that take place annually. However, we will undoubtedly do so if a window opens and we may accomplish something imaginative that enhances what we are performing.”he added.

The chairman of the IPL Governing Council voiced unflinching confidence in keeping the tournament’s home-and-away format throughout its 2024 edition, despite logistical challenges presented by the upcoming Lok Sabha elections and the T20 World Cup. When the BCCI released the schedule for the first 21 matches, which run from March 22 to April 7, he confirmed that the dates of the remaining matches will be revealed as soon as election results were known.
