AR Rahman and Wife Saira Announce Separation After 29 Years of Marriage

After having been married for almost thirty years, Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman and his wife, Saira Banu, have announced their desire to divorce. The couple sent a poignant statement via their attorney, Vandana Shah, sharing the news.

“Mrs. Saira and her husband, Mr. AR Rahman, have decided to part ways after many years of marriage,” the statement said. Despite their intense love for one another, it went on to say that the choice was made because of “significant emotional strain in their relationship.”

Emotional Announcement

Rahman shared his feelings about not being able to celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary on social media. We had wanted to make it to the big thirty, but everything appears to have an end. The weight of wounded hearts may make even God’s throne shake. However, we look for purpose in this shattering,” he said on X, requesting anonymity as they work through this trying time.

Khatija, Raheema, and Ameen are the couple’s three children; they were married in 1995. “We kindly request everyone to respect our privacy during this time,” their son Ameen wrote on Instagram Stories, pleading with the public to be understanding.

A Love Rooted in Tradition

Rahman’s mother arranged for Rahman and Saira to get married, which marked the beginning of their romance. In a 2012 interview with Simi Garewal, Rahman discussed their union in-depth and acknowledged that his hectic schedule with movies like Bombay and Rangeela left him with little time to look for a spouse. He characterized Saira as a “simple wife” who possessed the beauty, humility, and education he was looking for.

Legacy of the ‘Mozart of Madras’

The 1992 movie Roja, for which Rahman received the national award for Best Music Composer, marked the start of his incredible career. Time magazine referred to him as the “Mozart of Madras.” His Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack, which won an Oscar, launched him to global fame.
