Apple Refutes Claims of Selling Siri Data Following $95 Million Class-Action Settlement

Apple makes it clear that it does not sell or utilize Siri data to marketers or any outside parties in order to create marketing profiles. This comes after the tech giant settled a class-action lawsuit alleging that Apple had used Siri to capture private conversations and provide them to other parties for $95 million. Apple reassured its consumers by highlighting its dedication to user privacy in response to the case. According to a statement from the business, “We are continuously developing technologies to make Siri even more private, and will continue to do so.”

Privacy at the Core of Apple’s Design

Apple highlighted its commitment to protecting user data, emphasizing that privacy measures incorporated into its devices are intended to reduce data use and improve security. Apple stated that “privacy is a foundational part of the design process,” pointing to key elements of their user experience such as data reduction, on-device intelligence, transparency, control, and strong security. Processing as much data as possible on the user’s device is one of Siri’s primary privacy features. As a result, Apple can provide a customized experience without transferring private data to servers. For instance, local processing occurs on the device when Siri suggests widgets or scans unread messages.

Apple did point out that some Siri functions could need data from Apple servers. When this occurs, the business makes sure that very little data is utilized and that the user’s Apple account is not connected to any personal information. Unless otherwise specified, Siri requests and searches are not linked to specific accounts.

Siri Interaction Recordings: User Control and Transparency

To improve Siri’s services, Apple specified that audio recordings of user interactions are only kept if users consent. Users can choose to opt out at any time, and even then, these recordings are only utilized for that reason. “Users can easily opt out at any time,” Apple said, reaffirming its dedication to openness and individual privacy.
