Anurag Kashyap Criticizes Aditya Chopra’s Approach at Yash Raj Films
Chief Anurag Kashyap shared his perspectives on what is supposed to be Aditya Chopra’s functioning style in Yash Raj Movies. The chief, who’s likewise been fiddling with a lifelong in acting this year, was looking at the purpose for a couple of lemon under the pennant. YRF hit the dead center with Shah Rukh Khan featured Pathaan in January 2023, giving one of the greatest Bollywood blockbusters. Anyway simultaneously, the enormous spending plan film needed to counter YRF’s very own couple flops like Shamshera and Jayeshbhai Jordaar.
Speaking on the flops, Anurag cited Aditya’s name and said that a filmmaker ‘needs to empower and not dictate’ his team. Speaking to Galatta Plus, the Gangs of Wasseypur director says, “The industry is such that people will keep walking in from all walks of life,” before adding, “Here, cinema is largely controlled by those people, and that to second generation, that has grown up in trial rooms. They have not lived life. So they’re referencing is based on cinema. “What isn’t on screen can’t be cinema to them. And that is the single biggest problem with YRF—-it suffers from what I call the ‘trial room effect’.”
He explained the effect, giving examples of films such as Pirates of the Caribbean and Mad Max. “You take a story and you want to make a Pirates of the Caribbean out of it and it becomes Thugs of Hindostan,” he said. You have a story, you want to make a Mad Max: Fury Road out of it and it becomes Shamshera. The moment one moves in that direction, he is fooling only himself, especially in today’s time. Two-three years ago, only would Shamshera really have worked. He added, “You have one person sitting in a cave, who doesn’t know the world outside, dictating how everybody should be making their films and telling them what to do. Obviously you’re digging your own grave… You have to empower people, you can’t dictate terms. That time is passe now.

If Aditya Chopra has hired a bunch of people, he needs to empower them and not dictate them, not control the casting, not control everything. Sit in your office, hire good people if you trust them, and let them make their film. Which is the mistake he makes. He doesn’t let them (be).” Aditya Chopra and Yash Raj Films, however, haven’t given any sort of reaction to his comments.
