Anuj Thapan, one of the defendants in the Bollywood actor Salman Khan house fire case, committed suicide on Wednesday, but his family later claimed that the Mumbai Police had killed him while he was in custody. He also insisted that his post-mortem be carried out somewhere other than Mumbai. The brother of the deceased accused, Abhishek Thapan, declared that Anuj was not the kind of guy who would commit himself and seek justice. Six to seven days ago, Mumbai Police abducted Anuj from Sangrur. We were notified over the phone today that Anuj had taken his own life. He was not the type to have killed himself. The authorities killed him. Justice is what we desire. According to the news agency ANI, Abhishek Thapan was employed as a truck attendant.
Manoj Godara, the sarpanch of the deceased’s hometown, expressed suspicions about Anuj’s death and charged the police with his murder. “This case is suspect right from the start. There was a mother, a sister, and two brothers. Their father is absent. Anuj used to assist a truck driver at work. Mumbai Police took him away without notifying the Panchayat. Sangrur, Punjab-based Anuj Thapan was arrested on April 26 and transported to the Mumbai police headquarters’ crime section lock-up. Guns were allegedly given to Sagar Pal and Vicky Gupta, the shooters, by Thapan and Sonu Kumar Bishnoi, who were arrested earlier, according to the police. He was discovered hanging inside the lock-up on Wednesday while wearing a bedsheet. After being taken to the hospital, he was pronounced dead while receiving treatment.
