Ananya Panday Speaks Out on ‘Liger’ Script Concerns: “As a Woman, This Isn’t Right”

Unlike most star kids in Bollywood, Ananya Panday has carved her niche with performances, the latest being Kho Gaye Hum Kahan in 2023.

So, as she prepares for her forthcoming thriller CTRL directed by Vikramaditya Motwane this October, Panday is also in news for promoting her first streaming series titled Call Me Bae.

While her earlier films, such as Student of the Year 2, received a general thumbs-up, her 2022 outing Liger received quite a few slings. Directed by Puri Jagannadh, the sports action drama marked Vijay Deverakonda’s Bollywood debut as Panday made her Tollywood entry.

Made on a whooping production budget above Rs 100 crore, Liger managed to rake in just Rs 56.18 crore at the worldwide Box Office, reported Sacnilk. The film drew flak over its execution and some narrative flaws, also hinting at misogyny.

Panday candidly spoke about her reservations regarding the script of the film and unbearable discomfort with its dialogues, which sounded very outdated to her and failed to comport with the contemporary sensibilities.

“Every time I read a script, I have that ‘red flag’ mentality where I’m like, ‘No Gen-Z person speaks like that.’ It is very important for me as a woman to speak my voice up and say, ‘This isn’t sitting right’.”

For example, in Liger, there were parts of the script where I felt, ‘I am not okay saying this. As a woman, this is wrong.’ I’m glad I spoke up and those changes were made, she explained.

Currently, Panday is working on her career’s next chapter with Call Me Bae streaming on Amazon Prime Video from September 6. The show also stars Vir Das, Gurfateh Pirzada, Varun Sood, and Vihaan Samat, and is directed by Colin D’Cunha.
