Amid Shiva Temple Controversy, PM Modi to Offer Chadar at Ajmer Sharif Dargah During Urs

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will carry on his annual custom of sending a ceremonial “chadar” to the shrine on Thursday, despite the continuing controversy surrounding the Ajmer Sharif Dargah. He will be taking part in this gesture, which has great religious importance for millions of believers, for the eleventh time since he became prime minister. In the Urs of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, the ‘chadar’ will be presented at the dargah by BJP Minority Morcha president Jamal Siddiqui and Union Minister for Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju at 6 PM. Then-Union Minister Smriti Irani, Jamal Siddiqui, and a Muslim community delegation offered the “chadar” on his behalf during the 812th Urs last year.

This year’s gesture coincides with pending court cases. The Hindu Sena recently filed a petition in Rajasthan, claiming that the famed dargah is a Shiva temple. The court approved the plea. When a local Ajmer court on November 27 issued a notice in connection with a civil action alleging that a Shiva temple is located within Moinuddin Chishti’s dargah, the situation grew more heated. On December 20, the Ajmer Sharif Dargah Committee responded by filing a petition calling for the claims to be dismissed; the next court hearing is set for January 24. Even with these conflicts, the “chadar” offered during the Urs festival is still a potent form of worship that is thought to fulfill promises and provide benefits to innumerable followers.

A huge number of individuals keep on visiting the sanctum consistently during the celebration, and this year, the 813th Urs, which began on December 28, is being respected with colossal commitment.
