Air India Orders 100 More Airbus Aircraft: Fleet Expansion Confirmed
Air India said on Monday that it has put in a sizable request to purchase an extra 100 Airbus aircraft, including 90 narrowbody A320 Family aircraft and 10 widebody A350 aircraft. In the carrier’s bigger arrangement to build its armada and update its tasks to deal with future extensions, this request addresses a critical achievement.
In addition to the 470 aircraft that Air India had already bought from Boeing and Airbus last year, the announcement was made today. Six A350s and thirty-five B737-8s have already been delivered to the airline, leaving 529 deliveries waiting. With this most recent deal, Air India has now bought 350 aircraft from Airbus in the last two years.
Air India acquired 250 Airbus aircraft in 2023, including 220 Boeing aircraft— 190 737 MAXs, 20 787 Dreamliners, and 10 777X planes — as well as 40 A350s and 210 A320 Family aircraft. The latest request was referenced in Airbus’ October request and conveyance report, which likewise uncovered 235 aircraft orders from different clients, including an 85-aircraft buy put on September 5 by an unidentified buyer.
Although the delivery schedule for these 100 new aircraft was not disclosed by Air India, CEO Campbell Wilson said the company anticipates slower deliveries in 2025. Air India plans to satisfy the increased demand by extending its fleet by a third, reaching 400 aircraft by 2027.

The backlog of aircraft orders worldwide is still rather large; as of March, Airbus had 8,769 aircraft and Boeing had 6,259. Based on 2023 delivery rates, this backlog amounts to around 12 years of output, according to a CAPA analysis.
