Abhishek Banerjee Speaks Out Amid “Stree 2” Credit War: “This Film Belongs to Everyone”

Even as Stree 2 continued to be a roaring success at the box office, going past the Rs 500 crore mark in terms of worldwide gross collections, some other news that has continued to do the rounds is an ongoing credit war between the lead actors of the film—Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao. Drawing attention from amidst all this was Abhishek Banerjee, who played the much-loved character Jana, pointing out how filmmaking is teamwork and that noise around kudos due to whom should just be dismissed as noise.

Speaking to Zoom TV, Abhishek Banerjee shared his views on the issue: “I don’t understand PR. I don’t understand the kind of conversation that takes place on social media. When something is working, then there will always be some negative points—kuch toh negativity chahiye logon ko jisse voh baat karein cheezon ko bada banaye. We don’t focus on these things.”

He further said, “Jab humne shuru kiya tha, hume kisi ne nahi bola tha ki film iski hai ya uski hai. Jab humne film sign ki thi. Aapne khud hi dekha hoga bohot baar logo ne bola hai ki Jana ki entry pe log sabse zyada taaliyan bajate hain. Itne bade stars ke beech main kya hai Jana? Yeh film ensemble cast ki film hai. Yeh sabki film hai and that is the beauty of the film jo kisi shor ya comparison se change nahi hoga.”

Earlier, in an interaction with Bollywood Life, Abhishek had credited the success of the film to its director, Amar Kaushik. He had said, “Stree belongs to Amar Kaushik. No matter how much you fight, or what you do, it’s all futile. What purpose do all the fights over credit serve? He is the captain of the ship, and remember every film, every good performance, whatever you are watching, is because of the director, because he has the capability to keep the team connected. Stree 2 is a team film, an ensemble film.

Significantly, Aparshakti Khurana, also one of the leads of Stree 2, shared his views on the credit war and revealed that audience opinion is what really matters. He said, “Main ispe kuch bolunga, baat khulegi toh door tak jaayegi, main kuch bolna nahin chahunga, audience jo kahe wo sahi hai.” He further added that there is a possible “PR game” that is going on behind the curtains at work to either project or maintain some actors as secret.
