Abhishek Banerjee Breaks Silence Amid Kolkata Doctor’s Rape-Murder Protests: Calls for Stronger Anti-Rape Laws

Reacting to reports of the sudden increase in rape cases around the country, amidst the ongoing outrage over the alleged rape and murder of the trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee said,.

“In the last 10 days, since the country has been agitating over the RG Kar Medical College incident, 900 rape cases have been reported from different parts of India.

So these many incidents happened during the very period in which people were out on the streets demanding justice for this heinous crime,” a statement on social media platform X from Banerjee reads.

He expressed concern over the fact that no lasting solution has come up to address the issue and said that urgent legislative action was needed to that effect. With 90 rape cases reported every day, which comes out to about 4 every hour or 1 every 15 minutes, the need for some firm action was in front of everybody, he said.

He called upon the state governments to strongly demand that the Union government make provision for a stringent anti-rape law with effective justice, including fast-track trials and convictions that come within 50 days, along with infliction of severe penalties.

As doctors across the country continued their protests yesterday over the tragic case of the 31-year-old trainee doctor, there were questions in the Trinamool Congress regarding internal party dynamics. There is growing speculation about Abhishek Banerjee’s role and prominence vis-a-vis the party’s day-to-day operations at a time when West Bengal’s political situation remains on tenterhooks.
