Aamir Khan Reveals His Family’s Emotional Reaction to His Decision to Quit Films
Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan recently opened up about why he decided to quit filmmaking in a candid conversation with Rhea Chakraborty on her podcast series. Speaking to the actress, who became embroiled in controversy following the death of her boyfriend Sushant Singh Rajput last June, Aamir Khan explained that he had been working in films non-stop for more than 30 years and now wanted to spend more time with his family—so much so that he was thinking of leaving filmmaking. But the response from his family was not one he expected.
On the podcast episode, Aamir revealed in Hindi, “When I told them three years ago that I am quitting films, their reaction according to me, ‘Papa, how will you quit films? You’ve been involved like crazy for the past 30 years. You must be emotional right now and saying this. But you will not be able to do it.’ They just nodded and said okay.” As the actor believed, the family felt he had acted on an emotional impulse and did not believe he could give up the cinema world.
He further shared that he even came up to his production team, including Kiran Rao, with the news of his decision. He offered to pass on the reins of his production company, stating that since he wasn’t planning on making films anymore, they should continue the work. The revelation left all of them shocked, disturbed, and confused.
“Then Kiran told me, ‘You’re leaving us all,’ and I said no, I am leaving films and will spend more time with you all,” said Aamir. “Kiran said, ‘No, you do not understand this right now. If you’re quitting films, you are a child of cinema… you are made for cinema, and if you are leaving it, then you are letting go of life and the world. We are part of that world too, so you are leaving us too.’ She was crying. I said that won’t happen, you are getting it wrong. But she was correct which I didn’t realize it then.”

That Aamir Khan’s last film, Laal Singh Chaddha, bombed was perhaps one of the reasons for quitting. Aamir, of course, stayed in the movie business and went on to co-produce Kiran Rao’s second directorial feature, Laapataa Ladies, which actually received star reviews. He is now working on Sitaare Zameen Par, a Down’s Syndrome-based movie, further showing his commitment to telling impactful stories.
