Delhi Heatwave Alert: City Braces for Scorching 3 Days as Temperatures Soar Past 40°C

New Delhi is gearing up for a challenging few days as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts heatwave conditions to grip the city starting Monday, April 7, 2025. With temperatures expected to climb sharply and potentially cross the 40°C mark, residents are urged to brace themselves for a sweltering spell lasting through Wednesday. The IMD has issued a ‘yellow’ alert, signaling the need for awareness as the mercury rises, bringing uncomfortable heat to the capital.

Weekend Warm-Up

Yesterday, Sunday, Safdarjung—Delhi’s benchmark station—clocked 38.2°C, three ticks above normal, up from Saturday’s 35.7°C. Hotter pockets like Ridge (39.3°C) and Pitampura (38.9°C) hinted at what’s coming. Nighttime offered no break, dipping to 18.5°C—two below average—but the day’s heat still ruled.

IMD’s Heat Forecast

The IMD’s calling for 40-42°C highs today and tomorrow, officially a heatwave when it’s 40°C-plus and 4.5°C above norm, or tops 45°C. Some spots might nudge “severe” territory—6.5°C over normal—if the climb keeps up. “Daytime heat’s about to crank up,” an IMD official said, blaming clear skies and light south-easterly winds. Skymet’s Mahesh Palawat sees a cooldown by April 10 with clouds from a western disturbance, but till then, it’s a broiler.

Why It’s a Big Deal

Safdarjung hasn’t hit 40°C yet this year—unlike 2024’s five May heatwave days or 2022’s nine in April. This early April blast could signal a brutal summer, straining health, power, and water. Air quality’s already tanking—Sunday’s AQI hit 209 (“poor”), up from 163 (“moderate”) Saturday. More heat might choke it worse.

Getting Ready

Yellow alert means stay sharp—gulp water, dodge midday sun, skip that outdoor jog. Northwest India’s in the same boat, with heatwaves forecast region-wide for three days. Delhiites are urged to tough it out till Wednesday’s possible reprieve.

The Heat is On

Relief’s a maybe by week’s end, but for now, it’s about survival. Delhi’s facing down this fiery spell with grit—April 7-9, 2025, is a test of endurance as summer looms. Keep an eye out as the city sweats it through.
