Bodycam Footage Reveals New York Inmate Beaten by Officers Before Death
Robert Brooks, 43, was violently treated by correctional guards at the Marcy Correctional Facility in New York, according to disturbing bodycam footage that was made public on Friday. Brooks unfortunately died at a neighboring hospital on December 10, one day after the event.
Investigation Underway
New York Attorney General Letitia James, who is in charge of the investigation into the event, released the video, which was recorded on December 9. The recordings show a shackled Brooks sitting on a medical examination table being beaten by jail guards. Outraged by the occurrence, New York Governor Kathy Hochul called Brooks’ death a “senseless killing.” 13 cops and a prison nurse connected to the attack were fired by Hochul after an internal probe.
Brutal Assault Caught on Camera
Officers may be seen striking Brooks in the face and crotch on the video. While one cop pulled him by the neck and placed him back on the table, another slammed a shoe into his stomach. Officers can also be seen in the video taking off his pants and shirt, leaving him lying still. Additionally, an officer can be seen putting an unknown item in Brooks’ mouth before hitting him. Widespread criticism has been directed at the bodycam film, which is audio-free since the officers deactivated it.
Cause of Death and Union Response
According to preliminary medical findings, hypoxia from neck compression may have been the cause of death, and there are signs that someone else caused the fatal injuries. The post-mortem’s final findings are still pending. The state prison employees’ union has referred to the video as “incomprehensible” and is seeking further information.
Background on Robert Brooks
Just hours before the incident, Brooks, who has been serving a 12-year term for first-degree assault since 2017, was moved to Marcy Correctional Facility. His transfer from a nearby state jail was verified by officials.
