India’s Got Latent Contestant Mocks Deepika Padukone’s Depression; Samay Raina, Tanmay Bhat Face Backlash
India’s Got Latent, Samay Raina’s YouTube series, is renowned for its daring comedy and ability to push boundaries. But after one of the contestants’ jokes was judged disrespectful, the most recent broadcast caused a huge outcry. There was disagreement among fans after the joke seemed to make fun of Deepika Padukone’s public struggle with depression.
“Deepika Padukone also became a mother recently, right?,” competitor Bunty Banerjee said about Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh’s daughter, Dua, during the contentious moment. Fantastic, she now understands the true nature of depression. Raina, Tanmay Bhat, and Raghu Ram were among the panelists who laughed off the remark. Tanmay even put his head in his hands before joining the rest in their laughter. “I’m not trying to insult breakup-wala depression… but I am,” Bunty continued.
Social media users instantly took notice of the joke, especially on Reddit, where many fans expressed dissatisfaction with the trivialization of mental health. While one user denounced the joke as “pick me of the highest order,” another clarified that it was not meant to make fun of Deepika but rather to highlight the larger problem of mental health being mocked for “male validation.”
Others contended that the show’s edgy comedy harmfully trivialized mental health issues, while others defended it, saying it was no different from other programming. One critic said, “It’s punching down, unintelligently,” underscoring the insensitivity of equating sadness with unimportant things like breakups.
The judges were also embroiled in controversy after they were chastised for giggling at the remark. As one user put it, “Even the judges are like ‘omg mental health pe joke maar diya denk hehe haha hassi ke favvare.’” Even though the panel might be hilarious, occasionally their opinions are totally out of date.

A strong supporter of mental health awareness, Deepika Padukone has often talked about her battles with depression. She established The Live Love Laugh Foundation in 2015 to educate Indians about mental health. She started the More Than Just Sad campaign the following year to help general practitioners handle mental health issues like depression and anxiety.
A continuing discussion about the boundaries of comedy and its effects on delicate subjects like mental health has been spurred by the occurrence.
