In the newborn intensive care unit (NICU) of Maharani Laxmi Bai Medical College in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, a horrific fire broke out late Sunday night, killing ten infants and gravely wounding sixteen more. The event apparently began at around 10:45 PM and was triggered by a short circuit in an oxygen concentrator, according to District Magistrate Avinash Kumar.

Rescue and Casualties

54 children were admitted to the NICU at the time of the event. 44 newborns were saved thanks to officials’ prompt intervention. Of the ten neonates who died, seven have been recognized, and the other three will be identified through DNA testing.

Financial Aid Announced

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has given ₹50,000 to the people who have been harmed and ₹5 lakh to the family members of the departed. From the PM Public Help Asset, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has guaranteed ₹2 lakh for the family members of the people in question and ₹50,000 for the harmed.

Panic and Alleged Negligence

Images taken from the scene showed burnt medical equipment inside the medical clinic and patients and their families in a condition of dread. Per reports, the tragedy was aggravated by the medical clinic’s alarms not working due to a lack of upkeep. According to Brajesh Pathak, the deputy chief minister in charge of the health ministry, the hospital had a simulation drill in June after undergoing a fire safety examination in February. However, following extensive investigations by the police, health department, and a magistrate’s probe, the cause and accountability for the incident will be established.

High-Level Inquiries and Grief Messages

Chief Minister Adityanath has instructed senior officials to provide a thorough report within 12 hours to ensure successful rescue attempts. In addition to praying for the injured, President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Modi conveyed their profound sorrow over the loss of innocent lives. The hospital administration experienced harsh criticism from leader pioneer Akhilesh Yadav, who blamed them for deplorable thoughtlessness and called for harsh punishment.
