Fireworks in JPC Meeting on Waqf Bill: Opposition Leaders Stage Walkout in Protest

AAP MP Sanjay Singh, Mohammed Abdulla of the DMK, and Naseer Hussain and Mohamed Jawed of the Congress were among the opposition MPs who left the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) hearing on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, on Monday. The Delhi Waqf Board’s presentation, which members said was changed without the Delhi government’s knowledge, served as the impetus for the protest.

The members said that Ashwini Kumar, the administrator of the Delhi Waqf Board, who was present at the meeting, altered the board’s report without first getting Delhi Chief Minister Atishi’s consent. They said that this compromised the presentation’s transparency.

Context of the JPC Meeting To get their opinions on the suggested changes to the Waqf Bill, the JPC gathered representatives from the Waqf Boards of Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, and Uttarakhand. The Waqf Tenant Welfare Association, the B.K. Dutt Colony’s Residents Welfare Association and Call for Justice were among the other parties invited to offer their thoughts and recommendations on the measure.

A tense prior session BJP MP Abhijit Gangopadhyay and TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee engaged in a heated debate during the October 22 JPC meeting. As per reports, Banerjee turned out to be truly harmed subsequent to flinging a glass bottle out of fury, which came about to a transitory restriction from going to the panel’s gatherings.
