INDIA Bloc to Contest Uttar Pradesh Bypolls on Samajwadi Party’s ‘Cycle’ Symbol, Confirms Akhilesh Yadav

Akhilesh Yadav, the leader of the Samajwadi Party (SP), declared that all of the INDIA bloc’s candidates would run in the next by-elections in Uttar Pradesh using the SP election symbol, the cycle. The decision was made primarily to secure victory rather than to negotiate a seat-sharing arrangement, stressed Yadav, the Lok Sabha MP from Kannauj. Yadav said, “Congress and Samajwadi Party are united and stand shoulder to shoulder for a big victory,” in a post on X (previously Twitter). In this by-election, the Indian bloc will write a fresh chapter of victory. He went on to say that every employee in the INDIA bloc is motivated and committed to winning all nine assembly seats because of the alliance’s unparalleled collaboration and support.

The election will be centered on preserving the Constitution, preserving peace, and preserving the dignity of minorities, Dalits, and the backward sections, Yadav added. On November 13, by-elections are planned for nine assembly seats: Katehari (Ambedkar Nagar), Karhal (Mainpuri), Meerapur (Muzaffarnagar), Ghaziabad, Majhawan (Mirzapur), Sishamau (Kanpur), Khair (Aligarh), Phulpur (Prayagraj), and Kundarki (Moradabad). While the by-election in Sisamau was required for the disqualification of SP MLA Irfan Solanki after his conviction in a criminal case, eight of these seats were left empty after their respective MLAs were elected as MPs in the Lok Sabha.

Five of the ten seats, including Milkipur, were first demanded by Congress, but they ultimately decided to run for just two of them: Ghaziabad and Khair (Aligarh), leaving the other seats for the Samajwadi Party. Milkipur (Ayodhya) is not one of the nine seats for which the Election Commission of India has scheduled by-elections. In Karhal, Sisamau, Phulpur, Milkipur, Katehari, Majahawan, and Meerapur, the SP has already announced its candidates; nominations are due on October 25.
