Over 25 Detained and SHO Suspended Following Violence During Bahraich Idol Immersion Procession

According to authorities on Monday, the Bahraich district administration has suspended two police officers and arrested more than 25 people with the violence that broke out during an idol immersion ceremony on Sunday night, which claimed the life of a 22-year-old man. As a precaution, authorities deployed more security guards to keep the neighborhood peaceful and instructed schools to stay closed on Monday.

According to District Magistrate Monika Rani, the violence in Maharajganj had disrupted the immersion of the idols, which had been initially facilitated by authorities. The plunge lasted until five in the morning on Sunday. The body of the dead, Ram Gopal Mishra, a 22-year-old inhabitant of Rehuwa Mansoor village, was given to his family following a post-mortem test. He died from a gunshot wound.

The procession went through a minority-dominated area before a fight over loud music sparked the violence in Bahraich’s Mahsi Maharajganj market district. Mishra was fatally injured after reports stated that shots were fired and stones were thrown at the procession. Locals were incensed by the news of Mishra’s passing, which led to vandalism, with four houses burning and cars being destroyed.

According to Superintendent of Police Vrinda Shukla, 25 to 30 people have been arrested for their claimed roles in the altercations, and further suspects have been identified based on video evidence. Furthermore, a first information complaint has been made against Salman, whose home is said to have been the source of the gunshots during the parade. In response to the incident, Shukla announced that Mahsi Police outpost in-charge Shiv Kumar Saroj and Hardi SHO SK Verma had been suspended. Rani stated that sufficient police troops have been deployed to the area along with an extra district magistrate and sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) to restore peace.
