Zainab Nasrallah, Daughter of Hezbollah Leader, Killed in Israeli Airstrike: Report

Zainab Nasrallah, the daughter of Hassan Nasrallah, Hezbollah’s top leader, was possibly killed during an Israeli airstrike aimed at Hezbollah’s strongholds within southern Beirut. Although Channel 12 (an Israeli news channel) broke this story, neither the Lebanese authorities nor Hezbollah itself have confirmed it as true. According to Jerusalem Post reports, Zainab has previously discussed both her family’s sacrifices and backing for Hezbollah publicly.

In one such instance, she recalled how Hadi (her brother) died at Israeli hands back in 1997. If these reports turn out to be true, their symbolic importance could be immense for the militant Shia group from southern Lebanon, affecting its ongoing behavior vis-à-vis an escalating conflict with Israel. As fighting continued between them intensively along different points across Lebanon over recent weeks.

Is Hassan Nasrallah alive?

Reports are indicating that Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Hezbollah, may also have been targeted in this latest air raid alongside Zainab Nasrallah. No Israeli military spokesmen were prepared to confirm this. Still, unofficial Israeli sources were quoted in the Jerusalem Post saying they doubted Hassan Nasrallah could have survived attacks on the Hezbollah inner core so massive and accurate that they killed four men instantly, with a further five not expected to live. Officially, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said they were still assessing the results of their raid on the Iranian-backed group and would issue updates when they had more information.

Escalation of Conflict

Friday’s airstrike was among the most intense attacks on Beirut in almost a year, leaving the Lebanese capital hidden beneath thick smoke from the strike. The Times of Israel reported that this escalation comes after months of increasing tensions between Hezbollah and Israel, along with an ongoing conflict in Gaza. Over recent days, there have been more Israeli strikes against Hezbollah positions; at the same time, the Lebanese-based militant group has kept up its own cross-border attacks into northern Israel.

‘Our war is with Hezbollah.’

The IDF told people living near Hezbollah sites in Beirut’s Dahieh district to move out on Saturday. Israel said on X (which used to be called Twitter) that it would keep working carefully to take apart the Lebanese militant movement’s “offensive capabilities.” An Israeli military spokesman stressed that when his country fights Hezbollah, it does not mean all people in Lebanon.Hezbollah often hides weapons in built-up areas, putting civilians there at risk. Israel is worried about this as fighting goes on.The more senior figures from Hezbollah are killed or badly hurt—such as Zainab Nasrallah (the leader’s wife) or their children—the harder the group may find it to know what next step to take.
