Mumbai Lawyer Files Complaint Against BookMyShow Over Coldplay Concert Ticket Scam in India

A complaint has been filed by a lawyer based in Mumbai with the Economic Offences Wing (EOW). Allegations have been made that BookMyShow and Live Nation Entertainment are involved in a major ticket scam regarding an upcoming Coldplay concert in India. The event is due to take place over three days in January 2025 at DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai.

Tickets went on sale on 22 September for what will be one of the biggest gigs of the year. BookMyShow is the official ticketing partner. Amit Vyas, a founding partner at Vertices Partners, has claimed that users found themselves blocked or forcibly logged out—techniques he says allowed bots and black-market operators to take control of the ticket-buying process.

After noticing that tickets that had been declared unavailable on BookMyShow were later found on resale sites such as Viagogo, where they were being sold at vastly inflated prices—sometimes 30-50 times their original worth—Vyas argued that not only did this practice infringe consumer rights; it also broke various Indian laws.

As a result of his allegations, the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) has started to investigate further.Vyas wants more than just an inquiry, though: he intends to push for a First Information Report (FIR) to be lodged under numerous sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita following claims of organized crime, cheating, criminal conspiracy, and criminal breach of trust.

Furthermore, there is talk that he will petition the Bombay High Court via a Public Interest Litigation (PIL). If successful, one possible outcome could be new rules being drawn up to regulate large-scale events more stringently—something that might stop other people becoming victims in the same way at shows and matches in the future.

BookMyShow Responds to Allegations

In reaction to the claims, BookMyShow responded by saying, “We want to make it clear that we have no involvement with any ticket touting or resale sites like Viagogo and Gigsberg or third-party individuals looking to resell tickets for Coldplay’s Music of the Spheres World Tour 2025 in India.”

The company condemned scalpers, which are illegal in India, and stressed how they are supporting the police investigation. They also warned Coldplay fans to watch out for scams when buying tickets; if a deal looks too good to be true, then it probably is! “To avoid being ripped off, please only purchase via official outlets such as ourselves,” added a spokesperson.
