Kangana Ranaut Regrets Controversial Farm Laws Remarks After Backlash: “I Take My Words Back”

Kangana Ranaut, a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), created quite a stir when she decided to stick with her statements about the three farm laws—which were later revoked by India’s government—at first. However, she soon had a change of heart: in a video posted on X, Ranaut took back what she had said and expressed remorse. “Members of the press asked me about the farm laws,” Ranaut explained during her recording.

“I suggested that individuals protesting against them should appeal directly to the Prime Minister. But my words have upset many people.” The actress also recognized that holding political office means there are wider considerations to bear in mind than when making speeches as a film star alone.

“It’s not sufficient anymore only to be an actor,” she noted. “I must think of myself as part too, because now I am also an elected representative… What I say needs to not just reflect how party members feel but also what their policies  are.” Ranaut added, “I’m sorry if anyone got offended; I take back my words.”

In a recent video, Kangana expressed her party’s views on the farmers’ laws and declared her support by saying, “I stand with my party on this issue. Jai Hind.” The clip came after she faced backlash from both the ruling party and opposition leaders: an earlier social media post had led people to believe she disagreed with BJP policy.

A tweet from INC’s official account further fanned the flames when it resurfaced footage of Kangana suggesting those same repealed statutes be brought back, causing their loyalists to also question what was going on.

Then spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia waded in to settle things down (at least his side), issuing one statement clarifying that actually there is no need for confusion because when actresses make such comments, they’re speaking purely as individuals without any authorization from political organizations who may or may not support said ideas anyway!

Congress alleged that the BJP was trying to reintroduce laws that had been repealed and said Haryana would respond strongly. It’s not the first time Kangana faced criticism for her comments; she previously caused controversy by saying there had been violence, rapes, and murders during farmers’ protests.

A member of Bharatiya Kisan Union filed a case against her over these remarks, leading Bulandshahr MP-MLA court to summon her on October 25. BJP had earlier told her distance party from remarks about protests and be cautious with public statements.

The laws in question—the Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion Facilitation) Act; the (Empowerment Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance Farm Services Act; and the and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act—were passed in June 2020 and repealed in November 2021 after widespread protests, including self-immolation by priests ends life citing them, began late that year.
