Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia Meet Rahul Gandhi Amid Speculation They Might Join Congress for Haryana Elections

Immediately upon her return to the country from the Paris Olympics, a red carpet welcome was given to Vinesh Phogat by former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, who had come back in a dismal frame of mind due to her disqualification in the gold medal bout on account of issues relating to her weight.

On Wednesday, Vinesh and Bajrang met Congress General Secretary Organization KC Venugopal in New Delhi. A political future is being contemplated for Vinesh Phogat. Weight issues led to her disqualification in the gold medal bout at the Paris Olympics.

For the Bharatiya Janata Party, it is seeking a third successive term in Haryana while facing an embattled Congress keen for a comeback. Recently, the Election Commission of India announced that it moved the conduct of the Haryana assembly election from October 1 to October 5.

Apart from the political engagements, Vinesh Phogat also joined farmers at the Shambhu border in support of their ongoing protest for a legal guarantee of MSP that entered its 200th day on August 31.

Asked if she would contest the elections if nominated by Congress, Vinesh brushed aside the speculation, “Main is baare mein baat nahin karna chाहती. My focus is on the welfare of farmers, not on the elections. Sportsperson and citizen of India; supporting farmers is my priority.”

For long, Bhupinder Singh Hooda had termed the question of Vinesh joining Congress a “hypothetical question.” For the last few weeks, Vinesh, who came back from the Paris Olympics without a medal after reaching the final in the women’s 50 kg event, has been facing difficult times. Yet she is a prominent face of the farmers’ movement and was felicitated by the farming community.
