Telangana and Andhra Pradesh Floods: Jr NTR Donates ₹50 Lakh Each as Death Toll Exceeds 30

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu and Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy have asked the Central Government to declare the flooding of their states as caused by a natural calamity.

The rain has continued unabashedly over several regions during the past few days, claiming over 30 lives in its process. With tragedy, it has so far reeled 17 casualties in Andhra Pradesh and 16 in Telangana. Continuous rain which started on Wednesday has caused big destructions including roads that link the two states.

Speaking at a news conference on Monday, Andhra Pradesh CM Naidu said it was the “worst in my entire career as the chief minister”. Worse than the previous calamities like the Hudhud cyclone and Titli cyclone, he said, on account of human misery and loss of property.

The financial burden was heavy, CM Reddy said, adding that preliminary losses were estimated at around ₹5,000 crore.

Actor Jr. NTR donated ₹50 lakh each to the Andhra Pradesh and Telangana Chief Ministers’ relief funds.Jr NTR took to X: “I am deeply saddened by the flood situation in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

I also pray for the quick recovery of the affected people. I am donating ₹ 50 lakh to the relief fund of each state as a part of this endeavour to help in disaster management.”

According to the India Meteorological Department, IMD, heavy rain has resulted due to the depression over the Vidarbha region; adding that there is an enhanced risk of flash floods.

The IMD said the rainfall, which started on Friday and continued till the early hours of Saturday, is likely to decrease today and become moderate in both states.

The Prakasam Barrage in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, is brimming to its full level against 11.43 lakh cusecs of water being released against its total capacity of 11.9 lakh cusecs of water.

Most areas around the Prakasam Barrage are submerged underwater. The constantly swelling levels of the Munneru river in Telangana have caused massive floods in the Khammam district.

District Collector Muzammil Khan mentioned that the 200mm rain has caused conditions absolutely not seen in the last 30 years.

With more than 4,000 people shifted to safer places in Telangana, all 110 relief camps in these regions have been thrown open. Andhra Pradesh has also deployed 32 senior IAS officers and 179 officials to oversee the conduct of the relief operations.

Amidst all this, some of the difficulties persist at several areas, which include providing food to the marooned residents of these areas.

Both state governments have meanwhile sent out appeals to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for further support in the relief works.
