Mamata Banerjee Dedicates Trinamool Chhatra Parishad Foundation Day to RG Kar Victim Amid BJP Criticism

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday dedicated the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad Foundation Day to the victim caught in the tragedy at the RG Kar hospital. The alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor within the state-run hospital have angered all, and demands are being raised for the Chief Minister to resign.

Banerjee expressed her condolences on social media to the victim’s family and apologized to all women across the nation who faced violence. “On the Foundation Day of the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad, I dedicate it to that sister who just a few days ago we were mourning over her tragic death in RG Kar hospital… to the family of that sister to whom barbarically they did that crime to take his life and for that speedy justice with them, also to all women of all ages of India who have faced such inhuman work. I am sorry,” she said.

The Chief Minister said that students and youth are the backbone of society and they must work with high spirits toward an illuminated tomorrow, inspiring others around them. “Youths, students play a huge social role. To preserve a vision of a new day, to keep society and culture awake, and to rekindle everyone around—it is the work of the student society… My appeal to all of them today is take heart in this endeavor, stay dedicated,” said Banerjee.

But the gesture soon turned into a political storm as BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari sharply criticized Banerjee for a supposed “imitation” gesture, alleging that the CM was trying to seek all the credit for killers while the organization he claimed to be a founder of was ideologically WAY different than TMC. Adhikari also alleged that in the past nine years, Banerjee’s government did not allow council elections to prevent student dissent against her “corrupt government.”

Adhikari’s comments come just a day after the BJP spotlighted the arrest of Sayan Lahiri, who led the ‘Nabanna Abhijan’ protesters under the ‘Paschim Banga Chhatra Samaj’ banner. The police later arrested 126 members and supporters, in addition to the protesters, 33 being women in number, under the charges of rioting and conspiracy filed against Lahiri and other party activists.

The political battle surrounding this whole issue underlines the deepening tensions in suspension in the state of West Bengal, which underlies the tussle between both factions and the state government in securing the state’s governance over sensitive issues like the RG Kar incident.
