Prime Suspect in Assam Minor Rape Case Drowns While Attempting to Escape Police Custody

In a tragic turn of events, the prime suspect in the alleged gang rape of a minor girl in Assam’s Nagaon district drowned while attempting to escape from police custody. The incident occurred on early Saturday morning in Dhing, where the accused, Tafazzul Islam, was taken by the police to the crime scene for reconstructing the scene of the crime.

According to the police, he broke free from custody and jumped into a nearby pond in order to flee. Immediately, a search operation was launched. After almost two hours, Islam’s body was recovered in the water.

The heinous crime happened on Thursday in which it is alleged that gang rape of a 14-year-old girl occurred. She was a class 10 student returning home from tuition on her bicycle when three men assaulted her. They surrounded the girl, allegedly raped her, and left her injured and unconscious near a pond.

The locals spotted the girl and immediately contacted the authority. She was first taken to a local health center and later shifted to the hospital in Nagaon for further treatment and medical examinations. Police have arrested one suspect and detained another; efforts are on to catch the third person involved in the case.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has reacted to the crime and termed it an atrocity against humanity. He directed the state DGP to visit Dhing and ensure swift and decisive action against those responsible.
