IND vs SL: Highlights of T20I and ODI Squad Announcement
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have been added to the ODI squad for the next series in Sri Lanka, which is one of India’s two 50-over matches before to the 2025 Champions Trophy. Both Rohit and Kohli went abroad to spend time with their families after the T20 World Cup celebration in Mumbai on July 4. Despite rumors that they would forego the Sri Lankan trip and only make a comeback in September for the commencement of the home season, they are currently included in the team of 15 players for the series.
Hardik Pandya, who did not receive the T20I leadership, will play in only the T20I portion of the tour, while Jasprit Bumrah has been rested the entire time. Shreyas Iyer, who was passed over for an ODI squad earlier this year, is a former BCCI central contract holder. After a protracted injury absence, KL Rahul comes back. He is one of the two starting wicketkeepers, along with Rishabh Pant, who didn’t play an ODI until getting into a vehicle accident in December 2022.
Shubman Gill named India’s vice-captain
After leading a subpar team in Zimbabwe to a 4-1 victory over the Indians, Shubman Gill has been promoted to vice captain in both white-ball forms. Along with his recent batting prowess, Gill is currently the second-highest run scorer in the world for one-day internationals since the format’s inception in 2023. All-rounder Shivam Dube, a seam bowler whose only ODI to date was in 2019, is deserving of a return since Hardik isn’t playing in the ODIs. Since the IPL 2023, when he established himself as a force to be reckoned with against spin for the Chennai Super Kings, Dube’s reputation in T20 cricket has increased significantly.
Riyan Parag was also honored by the selectors for being chosen in both formats. His one-day promotion can be seen as a reward for his domestic form; he led Assam to their first-ever semi-final appearance in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20s and was the top run scorer in both the Deodhar Trophy and T20s. Harshit Rana, a fast bowler, received his first call-up for an ODI. Rana, who participated in the 2024 Kolkata Knight Riders IPL winning team, ended up tied for second place among his team’s wicket-takers with 19 scalps in 13 matches.
Mohammed Siraj will lead the pace attack, which will be completed by Arshdeep Singh and Khaleel Ahmed. Washington Sundar, one of two spin-bowling all-rounders for Sri Lanka alongside Axar Patel, was selected for both squads following his Player-of-the-Series performance in Zimbabwe. Unlike Rohit and Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja was left off the ODI squad. He is now retired from T20Is.
No Kuldeep, Abhishek for T20Is
The Sri Lanka T20I team, captained by new captain Suryakumar Yadav, will include up to nine players from the youthful team that defeated Zimbabwe 4-1 earlier this month. Yashasvi Jaiswal, who was a member of India’s team that won the T20 World Cup, and Gill, who led in Zimbabwe, are probably going to begin the batting.
Although Ruturaj Gaikwad and Abhishek Sharma, who scored a century off 46 balls in just his second Twenty20 international match in Zimbabwe, were not given much space, Sanju Samson, who was Pant’s backup choice with the gloves, kept his spot. Dube and Rinku Singh are probably choices for finishers. Gill, who took the lead in Zimbabwe, and Yashasvi Jaiswal, who was a member of India’s victorious T20 World Cup team, will probably begin the batting together.
Sanju Samson, who was Pant’s backup choice for the gloves, was still in the lineup, but neither Abhishek Sharma nor Ruturaj Gaikwad could get a look in after Sharma scored a century off just 46 balls in his only T20I against Zimbabwe. Dube and Rinku Singh are probably possibilities for finishers. As Kuldeep Yadav was not selected for the T20Is, he will play in the ODIs, leaving Ravi Bishnoi as the primary wristspinner. Neither squad included Yuzvendra Chahal, who did not play in a single match throughout India’s World Cup campaign.
Gautam Gambhir took over as coach of India after Rahul Dravid’s term ended with the T20 World Cup. His first assignment as the new coach is a trip of Sri Lanka. Three Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) scheduled for July 27, 28, and 30 at Pallekele will precede three One-Day Internationals (ODIs) in Colombo on August 2, 4, and 7.
