Sam Altman on His ‘Friend’ Airbnb’s CEO Brian Chesky: ‘Taught Me How to Shut Up’
CEO of Open AI Sam Altman stated that the growth and international renown of the ChatGPT creator was facilitated by his buddy and CEO of Airbnb, Brian Chesky. After ChatGPT became well-known in late 2022, the CEO of OpenAI claimed that “a lot of people” had volunteered to assist him. However, according to Sam Altman, nobody else contributed at the time but Brian Chesky.
“It was all completely crazy for me.” Every other week, Brian would basically sit down with me for roughly three hours and give me a list of the five items I needed to complete. “This is what you need to focus on, what you need to do proactively, where you’re falling behind, and what you should be thinking about,” he said.
Five days after ChatGPT went live, the user count surpassed one million. With 100 million monthly active users as of January 2023, the platform is the fastest-growing consumer application ever.
Sam Altman claimed that as the AI company expanded, Brian Chesky grew to be a close confidant. Sam Altman said he was “almost always right” and that “I learned to just always shut up and follow the advice.”

Sam Altman mentioned that Brian Chesky recently made the observation that OpenAI was “probably not thinking enough about” the political ramifications of the company’s generative AI technology. He also gave me advice on hiring decisions and how to “map” out the company’s strategy.
