Rain-related mishaps have affected Delhi Airport in the past, not only the T1 roof fall

On Friday, amid intense rain in the nation’s capital, a portion of the roof of the newly opened Indira Gandhi International Airport’s Terminal 1 fell, leaving one person dead and six others injured.

According to TOI, a thunderstorm with winds of little over 90 kmph and 31.8 mm of rain proved too strong for the terminal, which was constructed at a cost of ₹500 crores.

The incident caused the airport to shut down, trapping people in knee-deep water and destroying the x-ray machines and flight information display systems.

In June 2013, the Indira Gandhi International Airport experienced waterlogging due to persistent rainfall in Delhi.

An airport official told NDTV that water was running back due to the persistent rains, a subpar drainage system, and the geography of the surrounding area.

“Incessant rains, poor drainage system in surrounding area and comparative low elevation of the airport led to back flow of water, which led to flooding at terminal area,” according to them.

TNIE reports that portions of the runway and the entrance to Terminal 3, which opened in 2010, were submerged in water.

According to an airport official who spoke with NDTV, water washed back into the region due to the geography of the surrounding area, inadequate drainage, and persistent rains.

“Incessant rains, poor drainage system in surrounding area and comparative low elevation of the airport led to back flow of water, which led to flooding at terminal area,” they stated.
