PM Modi to Opposition: ‘Nation Demands Diligence, Not Disturbance’

The people of the country expect “debate and diligence” from members of the parliament, not “disturbance,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave a sharp warning to the Congress-led Opposition ahead of the start of the first session of the 18th Lok Sabha. Speaking to the media outside the newly constructed Parliament building, Prime Minister Modi expressed his confidence that MPs would live up to the expectations of the average citizen, saying that the public wants real representation rather than platitudes.

“India requires an accountable opposition. It is the people who desire content rather than platitudes, and discussion rather than agitation in the legislature. The public expects the opposition to act responsibly. PM Modi stated, “I hope it will fulfill its role and maintain democracy’s decorum. It has been disappointing thus far.” In a subliminal jab at the Congress, Prime Minister Modi brought up the emergency, claiming that the younger generation will never forget the destruction of the Indian Constitution.

It’s June 25th tomorrow. For those who uphold the dignity of the Indian Constitution and believe in democratic traditions, June 25 will always hold a special place in their hearts. The 50 years that have been a bad blot on Indian democracy will end tomorrow. The younger generation won’t soon forget how the declaration of emergency allowed the Indian Constitution to be rejected, and destroyed, and the nation to be converted into a jail. On June 25, 1975, former prime minister (later) Indira Gandhi declared a state of emergency.
